Accutane is a common medication prescribed by doctors and dermatologists for severe and nodular acne that does not respond well to other forms of treatment. It is a potent drug that has a high success rate in treating acne.

Effects:

Accutane works by drastically decreasing the size and sebum (oil) production of the skin sebaceous glands. Excess sebum causes oily skin that can lead to clogged pores and decrease the natural shedding of dead skin cells. Excess oil and dead skin cells can stick together, creating plugs in pores that can become inflamed because of bacterial growth, causing acne.

Benefits:

Accutane and other Isotretinoin drugs help to normalize the keratinatization or shedding of dead skin cells from the skin surface. This helps reduce clogged pores and acne, minimize pigmented blemishes and acne scar and even out skin complexion. Accutane also helps reduce inflammation that causes skin redness and raised bumps in acne break outs. As sebum output is dramatically reduced, the bacterium that causes acne, P. acnes is also reduced in the skin.

Skin Changes:

Accutane is an aggressive form of acne treatment and it is only recommended if other treatments do not work. It is not prescribed for minor or occasional acne because it can cause some unfavorable side effects such as dry skin. Because the sebaceous glands in the skin are altered by Accutane to decrease sebum output, this can cause excessive dryness in the skin. Moisture and natural oil production is important to keep the skin hydrated and plumped.

Sodium Lactate

Sodium lactate is found in the stratum corneum and is the most cost effective, naturally occurring expectant available for use as a moisturizer because of its hygroscopic (water-attracting) expectant properties and also helps to exfoliate dead skin cells. Vitamin-E

Vitamin E refers to a group of eight fat-soluble compounds that include both tocopherols and tocotrienols. Vitamin E provides the skin with necessary moisture as well as antioxidants for intense healing. However, pure vitamin E is not ideal as a daily moisturizer because it is so thick and sticky. An intense vitamin E bedtime therapy is ideal for concentrated skin healing and preservation.

Triclosan is an anti-bacterial agent. Triclosan works in a manner that it similar to that of some treatments for acne by killing harmful bacteria on the skin. Triclosan clears away the buildup of bacteria under the skin's surface that causes acne to develop. When used regularly, triclosan can reduce the likelihood of skin bacteria and protect the skin from infection. The major benefit of triclosan is its ability to remain on the skin for prolonged periods of time. Triclosan is not very water-soluble and has a slow degradation time that allows it to remain on the skin and continue to destroy bacteria after washings. Because this anti-bacterial is believed to be effective against 99.6% of germs, triclosan's properties are useful for people who apply it to areas of the face and body that are affected by acne.
